Join the Southern Black Girls and Women’s Consortium to Help Spread JOY for Mental Wellness and Self-Care!
The #BlackGirlJoyChallenge awards micro-grants to young girls/femmes young women who have ideas for spreading joy to their friends, family and community. Previous awardees have used their grants to create a plethora of joyful events including a drive-in movie experience for the community during the COVID-19 pandemic, create and fund programs to end period poverty, start an all Black girls robotics team, organize park restoration for the community and so much more! They receive $550 to initiate their project.
“ My #BlackGirlJoy Challenge will be challenging pre-teen and teenage girls to share why affirmations are important and what they do to affirm their peers. From those that complete the challenge, I will choose five of them to receive a "confidence box”.
“My Black girl joy challenge this year will be a 2nd annual fall meditation & breath work workshop focused on breathing to incorporate healing. This is a community gathering and safe space primarily built for black women. I will offer free attendance because I really want our community of women to prioritize their healing and peace. ”
“My #BlackGirlJoy Challenge is to offer gymnastics in my community to those who can't afford to take lessons. I was fortunate to be able to compete for seven years. I would like to purchase equipment to start a program in my community. Gymnastics gave me exercise, and wellness of mind and body and helped boost my self-esteem. ”
The #BlackGirlJoyChallenge is open to eligible applicants residing in the 13-state region within the southern United States, including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Virginia.
Applicants will be required to describe their ideas for spreading joy with their communities for a monetary award.
Once the submission period has ended, applications will be evaluated and awardees will be selected by Southern Black Girls’ Youth Ambassadors and Wisdom Council committees based on their creative joy-spreading project ideas.
If selected, the challenge winners will be given their micro-grant to complete their JOY projects.
